And then you read it really fast, and go, “Oh! Pun names are just that: Names that make puns. Some are semi- meaningful in that they sometimes describe an activity germane to the character’s profession, such as a baseball player named Homer of which there have been several actual Major League Baseball players with that moniker, although a few were pitchers. The pun name is a staple of the prank caller, who will disguise it just right so the other guy doesn’t get the pun until he blurts it out. A Subtrope is the humorous book-and-author gag sometimes referred to as Batty Books. Another subtrope is Sir Verb-a-Lot. If a lot of characters in a given work have a punny name, it could be an example of Punny Theme Naming. Also overlaps often with Real Joke Name , where someone laughs at what they think is a pun only to be told that that’s actually the character’s real name. For a list of tropes with Punny Names, see Just for Pun.

The Abbot also sat as a peer in Parliament. The last abbot, John Reeve, was given a pension, and may have lived his remaining days in this house in Crown Street. During the time of the abbey any form of local self determination by the townspeople of Bury existed solely through the Candlemas Guild and later the Guildhall Feoffment Trust. The property of the Abbey of St Edmund was surrendered to the Crown on 4th November but much of the wealth had already been confiscated in the previous year.
After the dissolution in , the rights of the Abbot returned to the Crown. The government of the town was largely ignored by the new owners of the abbey lands and privileges, and any joint actions continued to be carried out through the Guildhall Feoffees, largely without any formal legal backing. Over the next hundred years local government would replace the Abbots’ Rule, but religious differences would cause bitter divisions in the country.
However, the town had now lost the use of the great library of the abbey, the access to the several hospitals which the monks had run, the grammar school was closed, and the various charities and good works of the monks were suddenly gone. The poorest in society would suffer most from many of these changes. The library of books at the abbey does not seem to have attracted much attention from collectors at the time, and M R James thought that they were mostly acquired by local Bury people.
It would probably be 50 years before there was much interest in them from collectors.

Origins[ edit ] A university in the city of Canterbury was first considered in , when an anticipated growth in student numbers led several residents to seek the creation of a new university, including Kent. However, the plans never came to fruition. In the Education Committee of Kent County Council explored the creation of a new university, formally accepting the proposal unanimously on 24 February The name adopted reflected the support of both the city and county authorities; as well as the existence of the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, which officially opposed the use of a name too similar to its own.
However, the four original colleges — Darwin, Eliot, Keynes and Rutherford — remain, together with the newer Woolf and Turing colleges, each with their own masters. In July the tunnel collapsed, damaging part of the Cornwallis Building, which sank nearly a metre within about an hour on the evening of 11 July. In the university opened the University Centre at Tonbridge now the University of Kent at Tonbridge for its School of Continuing education , helping to enhance the availability of teaching across the county.
Initially based at Mid-Kent College, a new joint campus opened in As a consequence of the expansion outside Canterbury the university’s name was formally changed to the University of Kent on 1 April In the university was rebranded with a new logo and website. The logo was chosen following consultation with existing university students and those in sixth forms across the country.
The proposed changes to UK and EU undergraduate tuition fees did not apply to international student fees. Following the extension of Keynes College in , two new colleges opened on the Canterbury campus, Woolf College for postgraduates in and Turing College for undergraduates in Several other new buildings were also added, including the Jarman School of Arts Building in , the Colyer-Fergusson Music Building, a performing arts space, in , and the Sibson building, housing maths and the business school, in

Jor-El wanted his son to reclaim the fullness in life denied him by the sterility of Kryptonian culture, a world where its inhabitants rarely had direct contact, and preferred to interact with each other virtually. Jor-El planned to send his son to a distant planet orbiting a yellow sun he had been studying for some time: Meanwhile, the view on a monitor of a Earthling working in a rural area startled Lara, who noticed he exposing his skin to the sun and stepping on unprocessed soil.
Jor-El explained that exposure to the yellow sunlight would charge Kal-El cells into living solar batteries and gift him with incredible powers.
